Affording a family holiday

• More than one in five( 21 %) parents, the equivalent of over two million, have taken their child out of school in term time to afford a holiday
• A quarter( 25 %) of parents of children with special educational needs have done this to afford a holiday
• Primary school parents( 25 %), parents in Scotland( 29 %) and parents in Wales( 32 %) are all more likely to do this than the national average
• More than a quarter( 28 %) of parents who took their child out of school to afford a holiday did not tell the school this was the reason for the absence
• More than a quarter( 28 %) of parents, the equivalent of three million, have not been able to afford a family holiday in the last 12 months
• Half( 50 %) of parents in households with an income of less than £ 20,000 have been unable to afford an annual holiday
• More than four in ten( 43 %) of those with household incomes of £ 20,000- £ 35,000 a year have also not been able to afford a holiday
• In total, four in ten( 40 %) parents whose household income is below £ 50,000 a year have been unable to afford an annual holiday
• Parents in the East of England and the South East find this a particular issue – 35 % and 33 % respectively have not been able to afford an annual holiday
• 8 % of parents have borrowed money to afford a family holiday in the last 12 months
